There are many types of RV out there, but destination trailers are in a class all their own. These spacious, comfortable, and well-appointed trailers are designed more for long stays than long drives and are perfect for long vacations and long-term living. We here at Minneapolis Trailer want you to have the exact right equipment for your needs, so we wanted to talk a bit about destination trailers and what makes them special, below. Definition

First, we really need to nail down just what a destination trailer is. These may look like any old camper from the outside, aside from being slightly taller, but the interior puts the comparison to rest. Because they’re designed to sit still more than they are to drive around, destination trailers are heavier and taller to accommodate more residential-style interiors.

Hardwoods, large appliances, sliding glass doors, huge windows, and residential-quality features and finishes make these trailers the perfect home on the road.

What to Expect

As we mentioned, these are taller than the average rig, allowing for ceilings up to around 7 feet high. They often make use of slide-outs that ensure maximum interior living space, especially in the bedroom and living areas. Gourmet-style kitchens with all the appliances and comforts of home make cooking a breeze, and natural light combines with a built-in fireplace to provide all the light and heat you could ever need or want.

Many models are equipped with two separate private bedrooms, and some even have a loft sleeping area for maximum comfort with maximum numbers of guests. King-sized beds are an easy fit, and some models even come with a full bath and half bath both!

Considerations

That said, destination trailers aren’t for everyone.

Price

With the fuller appliances and storage, ample space, and the extra material required to house all of it safely and comfortably, you can expect a destination trailer to be significantly more expensive than most travel trailers. They’re designed to be a second home with all the comfort that implies, though, so they’re still cheaper than renting a second home or condo.

Towing

These are some hefty campers, often weighing around 10,000 pounds or more—about twice as much as the average travel trailer. Fortunately, they don’t require commercial vehicles to tow them and can still be bumper-pulled by a powerful pickup. Just keep in mind that due to the larger size and weight, they’ll be a bit more sluggish on the road and when maneuvering and can take careful coordination to park safely.
